Lipstick of the Week: Mac Viva Glam VI

Love, Love, Love this shade- my lips but better :)

It's a natural neutral shade, but with a bit more pinky, red.  Part of Mac's Viva Glam Collection.  I don't know if it is a pemanent collection, or permanent for a number of years (Like glam Gaga is out for 1 year).

Love this shade :) Perfect for winter when I have very pale skin!   Can also be used as an emergency cream blush.  Its a Luster and has the normal Mac Vanilla scent.  Although I love the scent, it can be a bit weird if I apply in and then eat something savoury!  I can also sometimes find it a bit drying, but I can always add a gloss.  I also find that the colour can last a while longer than some other lipsticks I have tried.

Do you have any of the Viva Glam collection?  What is your 'my lips, but better' shades/lipsticks?

Phone in the bath? Water on laptop?

What to do if your electric get wet.

I have had a lot of people ask me this recently soooo- If you have dropped your phone in liquid (toilet, wine, bath) or spilt liquid on your laptop, remote control etc then...

1) DO NOT SWITCH IT ON!! The liquid conducts electricity (remember thunderstorms and why you shouldn't us a hairdryer in the bath?!).  If a moisture droplet falls over two connections inside the gadget then it will create a short circuit.  It wont work, or worse, will break it forever.

2)UNPLUG THE GADGET FROM THE MAINS SOCKET!! TAKE OUT THE BATTERY!! (See above! It might trip your house electrics if left plugged in, EVEN if it is switched off! (Remember those exploding GHDs? All switched off, but plugged into the wall?  The transformers in the plug will still cycle if the plug is in the wall- so ALWAYS unplug things when out of use!!)

3) DISMANTLE as much as possible.

4)PLACE in a tub of dry rice, or if you have bags of silica gel (those packs that come in new bags or shoes) then use those.  They are supposed to suck up moisture droplets from the air.

5) PLACE in the airing cupboard or, failing that,  on/near a radiator.  LEAVE ALONE for three days.  Cross fingers and see what happens.

Hopefully this help you.  I have known this method work on phones and laptops. Sea water (super conductive due to salt), wine, water and juice!  Most people will go out and buy a new phone etc straight away, but have patience and hopefully this will save your pocket and data.

If the gadget still has problems then seek further help from a phone or laptop company.  It is likely that the circuits have been corrupted permanently and that, even though the liquid is gone, something has shorted and blown up internally.

If you have any tricks then let me know!

300 Posts: Reflections: Plea. What goes into a blog?

We don't say thank you enough.

I have been part of the blogging community for several years, I also noticed that I have posted 300 posts on this blog and over 3000 tweets.  Reflecting on this, I have seen a lot of changes in this time.  The blogging community is still going strong but has been through several trials, lots of arguments, some bullying by companies (because some of us didn't praise the product enough publicly!!), lots of sharing, lots of friendships formed, lots of beauty news.

Us bloggers are still here though!  We take time to share our thoughts regardless of who reads them, and provide real thoughts from real people (no air-brushing!).

When I write a post, I normally am responding to an email or comment, or just a random thought.  If I take photos I have to snap, upload, crop, watermark, downsize the file and then upload to blogger.  I then have to write the content and spell-check (although sometimes my proof reading doesnt work!).  All in all a post takes about an hour on average.  I enjoy writing each one, regardless of who reads it.

Over the past year I have noticed a lot more negative comments on every blog I visit.

I know there is not always time to comment, but if I read something and find it interesting, informative, useful, entertaining, inspiring or funny then I try to say thank you.

So in my 303rd Computergirl's Musing, I am going to urge you all to support your fellow bloggers.  Join me in the THANK YOU CHALLENGE!

For one week, if you read a post and find it interesting, informative, useful, entertaining, inspiring or funny, then say thank you!

Let's get some positive thoughts on blogs.

A thank you will raise a smile and inspire.  Make someone's day.

How could I finish this post without saying thank you!  Thank you for all the comments, friendships and inspiring posts.  I love blogs :)

My Skincare Routine

Here is what I am currently using.  I do rotate round a few things, but at the moment I am reaching for these most of all.

Cleanser: Origins Checks and Balances (Post HERE)
Toner: Neal's Yard Lavender Floral Water
Moisturiser: Simple

Botanics Eye makeup remover (Link)
Nude Cleanse off facial oil (Beauty Bay or SpaceNK)
Spa Find Toner
The Body Shop Seaweed Night Serum for Combi Skin! (Post on it here)

I also have some face masks and balms I use a couple of times a week.

I use muslin cloths with the cleansers, which adds a gntle exfoliation.

What products do you normally reach for in your skincare routine?  Have you used any of the above?

Review: Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Cleanser

Origins say:
When it comes to faces with dry and oily places, it takes a clever cleanser to balance the two. This gentle, frothy face wash carefully does both jobs without canceling each other out. Konjac Powder seeks out oil, soaks it up then keeps it well in-check, while Wheat Protein balances and protects dry prone zones. And Broadleaf Kelp breaks down dirt, disperses excess oil and sends dullness down the drain. There's also aromatic Bergamot , Spearmint and Lavender to add pleasure to the process. Skin feels comfortably refreshed after cleansing, never tight, pulled or parched.

HOW TO USE: Squeeze small amount into palm, add tepid water to lather. Swirl over skin, steering clear of eyes. Rinse thoroughly. Great for A.M. and P.M. cleansing.

Checks and Balances™ is best for combination skin.

What Computergirl says: In short, I love it.  I have been using it in a routine- so very morning and some evenings, and it has improved my skin so much.  I have even had compliments on my skin.  My skin history has been detailed on my blog (Spots, spot scars, redness, blackheads, oily patches, flaky skin etc etc).  Getting this product was a gamble but I am so glad I did.

It doesnt smell weird, it balances my skin and seems to last all day (hurrah).  I need a tiny (pea sized) blob, and a small drop of water.  This dilutes the thick cleanser enough to go found my whole face.  I have had no reaction.  I normally wipe it off with a face cloth or muslin cloth.

It is a deep clean, but not using harsh chemicals (Remember my experience with Clinique Clarifying lotion?!  I like Clinique but I can't use that lotion.).  Origins is formulated without Parbens, Phthalates, Propylene Glycol, Mineral Oil, PABA, Petrolatum, Paraffin, DEA, Synthetic colour, synthetic fragrance, Animal Ingredience.  Tested on humans.

It smells a little bit minty, but not overpowering at all.

Cost: £15 for 150ml (Which as this rate will last me for 9-12 months!!)
Where? Origins counters, online at House of fraser, Debenhamsor from Boots (if you want the boots points but dont live near a stockist then order online and collect from your local store!)
Repurchase? Yes
Recommend? Yes, if you have combi skin!

Have you tried this? What cleanser do you use?

Review: Bourjois Volumizer Mascara

A 2 in 1 Mascara which I picked up a little while a go.  I was asked to do a review to here it is.

What Bourjois say:
Lots, but essentially

Killer volume! No clumps guaranteed!

11 x more volume

How does it work?
You unscrew the top and the mascara wand is pulled through a small tube.  Screw it back together and undo the lower screw lid and the wand is pulled out through a larger tub (leaving more product on the wand).

What Computergirl Says:
No Clumps? Really? Check the pictures below. (Naked lashes, step 1, step 2)

Step one, it clumped my lashs straight away.  Step two just volumised the clumps!  Perhaps it was my method, the formula is thick and clings to the wand.  You can see it clinging to the wand in the pictures above.  Maybe it will get better results with a better application... but I'm just not getting it so far.

I will try again (because I hate throwing things away) but I think this is a thumbs down.

I picked this up with a free Kohl pencil.  If you want a review of this, just say.

Cost: £10
Where? Boots, Online
Repurchase? No.

Have you purchased this itm? What are your thoughts?  What mascaras do you avoid?

Accessory of the Month: Accessorize Gold Leaf Earrings (AOTM)

Autumnal golden sparkle.  Perhaps too much for day wear as they are quite big, but I love these.

£12 from Accessorize stores only.

These will probably appear in my christmas photos :)

If you do an AOTM post, feel free to link me below!

What accessories are you loving at the moment?  Do you change your accessorise season to season?

Haul: Illamasqua, Dior, Origins

I was quite excited to pick up a few products which I have wanted for a while.  It was a splurge with a reason!

I managed to pick up Dior Shimmer Powder in Amber Diamond from the lovely Laura.  It is ALWAYS out of stock here so I was really pleased to receive it.  She sent me a lovely card which was spritzed in Amor Amor (love this fragrance!).

Next I had word that Charlie didn't want her Illamasqua Ore pigment.  Used once.. I was there like a shot as I have not been able to pick this up either.  Must be two very popular products!!

I managed to pop into a Mac counter and get matched for concealer this weekend.  The MUA picked out Studio Sculpt as I find my concealers fade throughout the day.  It was a darker number than the foundation, but I think it might just be the range rather than a different colour.  We will see.  I was a bit confused about the difference in numbers!

I also picked up a few things from Origins.  I say a few (see below!!).  Would you believe that I only bought the top two things (Night-a-mins ey cream and Brighter by nature).  The rest was gifts with purchase!
This made my pennies go a lot further!

I have been using 'Checks and Balances' Cleanser which I purchase recently (See here) and thought it would be worth picking up a few other things.  I was amazed at the offer- a great way to try lots of things without commiting!  I have a decent sized day moisturiser as well as 2 mini boxes of treats!  Thanks Origins!

So that's a(nother) haul.

I will be reviewing the products (if you want?)

Stay tuned for
  • my giveaway winner
  • Bourjois mascara review
  • Skincare routine
  • Accessory of the month!
Have you tried any of these items?  What are your recent purchases?

'That' time of the month!

'Sometimes it's hard to be a woman....' (Forget the next line, it's just hard being a woman, isn't it?!)

Yes girls, (or guys if you are reading this!  Please keep on reading as you could gain brownie points!), 'that time' of the month.  The bloating, cramps, grumpy-ness, emotional crying, tiredness, oily skin, spots, tender places (that hurt!), stabbing pains, headaches... and that's just for starters.

I thought I would share with you a few of my tips for the time when rational well-balanced girls turn into crazy emotional monster wrecks.  I hope this helps you.  It might pay to leave this open for your guy friends to read!!
(Images: Pants: Topshop, Hot water Bottle & Socks: Superdrug, Chocolate: Mine! Massag bars: Lush)

  • TEA! Specifically Camomile tea.  It's an aquired taste but helps reduce uncomfortable bloating.  Try putting a tea spoon of honey in to improve the taste!
  • WATER! Drink extra water the week before to help replace fluids lost.  This will also help water-retention.
  • CHOCOLATE!  Dark chocolate if possible.  It helps in many ways, but generally it releases happy hormones, which help you to relax and therefor ease tension!
  • HOT WATER BOTTLES!  The heat relaxes tense muscles and helps ease pain.
  • HOT BATHS! See above!  Plus the bubbles are fun.
Boys, what can you do?
  • LIE INS!  It is likely that our sleep will be disturbed due to the very small rise in our body temperature.  A bad night's sleep can cause poor concentration, grumpyness, irrational behaviour, stress, anxiety- let us sleep in!  Make an effort not to wake up if possible!!
  • ACCEPT our irrational behaviour.  Don't question it too much as we will a) shout or even worse b) cry.  Either of these could be in public.
  • SOFA! Let us have an evening  curled up on the couch.  You may bring us a duvet, chocolates, glass of wine, magazines, hot chocolates.  If you are feeling VERY nice, then place a hot water bottle in out bed in the winter, so it is nice a warmed up for us girls.
  • BATH! No not you!  Run us one!
  • SUPPORT and REASSURE US!  Talk to us and find out what we struggle with.  If we get spotty round 'that' time then tell us we look beautiful, without being prompted!

  • Question why we were so long in the bathroom. Especially in public- you might not like the answer!!
  • Use the 'are you on your period?' question as a form of attack in an arguement, especially if you think we are being grumpy.  We can't help it.  We get moody sometimes. Deal with it.
  • Liken our monthly experience to anything you go through i.e. stubbing your toe.  When you have a womb and push babies out of it, then we will accept that you know what its like!!

So there you have it.  Just a few do and donts, and tips.  This was written with some humour, so I know that us girls have to accept some responsibility!  PMT is never an excuse!

What things help you round that time?  Do you have any tips to share?  What is the nicest thing a friend, boyf or husband has done for you when you have had PMT?

Is anyone elses blogger Dashboard broken?

Mine seems to have lost the scroll bar, and all the pictures are huge!  I can't view back through old posts, it seems to only be showing me the last 5 or six posts.

I don't like it!!  Anyone know what is going on?

Haul: By Terry and Nude + Blog sale

What is in the Space NK bag?!

I was in need of a bit of a pick me up.  I also needed to get a skincare product.

I am on a skincare quest as those who read my blog will know.  Skin is the base, and if it's not right, thn you can't cover it up!  I belive a good skincare regime is an investment.  This doesn't mean you have to spend the earth, but you must invest your time in it.

So, what did I buy??

Nude Cleasing Facial Oil and By Terry Baum de Rose.

Both of these have cult status in the beauty world- and so far rightly so.

The Cleansing oil removes makeup and dirt, giving a thorough deep clean.  The Baume de Rose is a lip treatment with SPF.  This makes both of them sound very simple, but they are so much more.

I was also given some haircare samples and a Nude Miracle Mask sample. This is great as I can't always get to a store and have to order things onlin (which I hate doing without trying things, smelling etc!)  I was also invited for a makeover next time I am in a store.

Have you tried any of these products?  What did you think?  If you want a detailed review on any of these then let me know below!

BLOG SALE!! I will be putting up a few items this weekend, probably some Smashbox, Sanctuary etc.  Keep an eye out for it!

Tali's Tag: Would you rather....

Tali's TAG
Would You Rather..
Never use mascara again or bronzer again?
Bronzer.  I am so pale that I don't always use it anyway (shock!!) because I can get it so wrong and look like I have fallen in mud and forgotten to shower! Embrace the pale!!

Only be able to buy high end make-up or drugstore make-up again?
I do like some things from both ends.. ummm high end can be an investment.  If I was givn a budgt for it then High end, although I would miss brands like Sleek, Bourjois, Body Shop, Rimmel- Mac (is Mac a high end or low end??!!)

Be In Love or Be Loved?
I think I am with Tali that I would die of a broken heart if I was in love all the tim and not loved back.
Go out with chipped nail varnish or unshaven legs?
If it was winter then unshaven legs (tights and trousers all the way!)
Go out with messy hair or no make-up?
Messy hair.  My skin is going through a bad patch!
Leave the house with an orange tan or peroxide-gone-wrong ginger hair?
Orange Tan because I could cover most of it up and exfoliate it off?  I would hate to ruin my hair as it would fall out :(
It were Winter forever or Summer forever?
Summer probably, warm weather, lighter nights, long walks, BBQs, lots of outdoor exercise...sigh... Although cold winter days with blue skies ar fun (but they do chap my lips!)

Leave the house with dried toothpaste drool or crusty yellow sleep eyes?
Eyes- easy to fix and less noticeable than toothpaste drool.

Give up all MAC or Illamasqua products?
Probably Illamasqua, although they do have some great pieces.
There you go!  I tag all of you!! If you do this then please post a link below so I can see what you put!

Here are the questions in easy cut and paste format!
